I do a lot of different things on my computers and often have quite a few programs open. When the time comes to turn off the PC and go do something else, that can mean a lot of clicking to close down everything. On my laptop, I can just hibernate but I prefer to actually shut down my big desktop.
So when I ran across a reference to a little utility that can close all your open applications at once with one click, I was intrigued. The free utility is called CloseAll and it comes from NTWind Software. It is a very small (36 KB) zipped download and is a stand-alone application that requires no installation and makes no changes to your computer. Both 32- and 64-bit executables are included in the zipped package and the program runs in Windows XP, Vista, and 7.
The close action is very fast; it simply flashes a “close” signal to all open applications on the desktop and then ceases. If something like a Word document needs saving, the usual dialog for saving the document will appear first so no work is lost. You can create a desktop shortcut to the little executable file and assign a hotkey if desired. If you have programs that you do not want to be closed, there is a switch that can be added to the shortcut to exclude one or more programs from the shutdown signal.
More details and the download are at the developer’s site. The utility files get a clean bill-of-health from VirusTotal.com
